Preparing Primary School teachers for a modern education in a remote mountainous area of Nepal
The remote village of Sotang in the Everest region of Nepal is full of adolescents craving higher education after high school. To solve this, a project was initiated by a brave principal, Ishwor Timalsena, to allow aspiring teachers to achieve a 4-year degree, normally only available through a university in Kathmandu. Mr. Timalsena’s vision led to the construction of The Sotang Campus, a preparatory school for future teachers of primary and secondary schools. A primary focus of the college is to keep people in remote regions, battling the crisis currently affecting many areas of Nepal as students flock to larger cities or even other areas of the world for greater opportunities.
We are supporting the Sotang Campus with the following action:
- Creating a computer room with a collaborative environment to allow student teachers to learn more effectively
- Providing financial support to double computer teaching hours so classes can be smaller (16 students per class) in groups of 4 teaching clusters
- Buying the remaining equipment for the computer room (8 desktop monitors) and preparing the room to function with a router when 4G will be available.
For now, the computer room is an answer to a new regulation, requesting teachers to be familiar with basic computer functions in order to integrate them in their classes. We hope that this will be the beginning of a larger use of the computer room and we will pay attention to the way the equipment is maintained. As with all of our projects, we are looking at creating sustainability.
Background Information:
Solukhumbu district is situated at the lap of the highest peak, Mount Everest. Though some college were already established there in the past, but they were centralized in the district main towns like Salieri. Those colleges were unable to address the necessities of the students in more remote areas, with no financial help or resources to get higher education. In order to address the strong desire of those students who live in rural areas and have been educated through the Sotang high school, Sotang public campus was established in 2013 AD through community support. They teach Bachelors of Education as a major in the College. There are students coming from Sotang, its adjoining rural municipalities like Lokhim, Jubu, Bung, Gudel, Waku, Pawai, and Chheskam. Sotag public campus is well-renowned campus among its adjoining rural municipalities, and the neighboring district because of the quality education provided by the college, and now this college is only college having ICT course among the other neighboring districts like Khotang, Bhojpur, and Okhanldunga. There are 188 Students in the college, among them there are 90 students in the first year, 45 students in the second year, 38 students in the third year, and 15 students in the fourth year. IN 2019, there will be 38 students. We hope the school can divide the class into 2 groups of 16.

Need for the project
Sotang Public Campus has a number of students growing every year. Now they have one computer lab where they have 10 computers, 1 projector, 2 laptops for the teachers which is not enough for the growing number of students. They have a computer lab in an awkward configuration condition (the way they have designed is very poor). They have a power cut problem in Sotang which is affecting the students and the teachers to run the ICT class which is also affecting the student’s regularity since the teacher has to shift the class at the evening or afternoon time when there is a light which proves they are in need of inverter.
List of the Equipments Proposed
|
Computer Lab Planned
1. Lab itself
2. Teaching requests
- In one computer lab there will be four to five round tables with four computers with the servers in each table
- There will be projector in the front wall and the laptop for the teacher in the front
- Additional portable lights per table (depends on power outlets in room)
2. Teaching requests
- 16 students per class
Expected Outcomes
Teachers need to know the basics of Word, Excell, and Powerpoint, as per the new ITC regulation for teachers. By this initiative, we hope to provide the students with better and productive alternatives. The students will not just learn computer skills but they will also be open to a wider world of information, possibilities, and opportunities through the internet. The computer room is a way to develop new syllabus with Tribhuvan University, including potentially a “website” building class using Wordpress. Additional courses could be developed by computer teacher for other Village constituents
Maintenance Plan
Sotang public campus will be maintaining the equipment and computer lab. They will also have to figure out for the faster internet, and the good ICT teacher to run the ICT classes. Indra Prasad Timilsena will be in charge of it. He will write a detailed letter outlining the procedure of maintenance BEFORE the MoU is approved.
