We've just signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Kathmandu University School of Education in Nepal. This is a major step forward for AO as we work towards establishing a modern Computer Learning Environment Center (CLEC) for the University and its students. Special congratulations to the AO US & Nepali team for making this happen!
Meet Dhiraj Rai
Dhiraj Rai was a student at the Sotang campus, who graduated recently with a Bachelor of Education. He was also Student Council President on campus during his studies there. He now has his own farm where he currently works, and just planted 350 banana trees that give both fruits and grass to feed his two cows. He sells his produce at the Sotang Market, traveling an hour and a half by foot to get there. Dhiraj is also curious about local organic agriculture methods in Canada, hoping to bring this to the Solukhumbu region of Nepal. Having experienced the Computer Learning Environment Center built at Sotang Campus by AO, this innovative classroom was integral to his educational experience and also allowed him to develop his farm during his studies and remain near Sotang.
Our Continued Impact at the Shechen School
A few years ago, AO installed a computer room in the Shechen School in Nepal. Today, the room has been proven very useful as Principal Jhabindra Subedi and the teachers have all experimented with distance learning and have adapted very quickly to the new context created by pandemic. To view a short video of students using the computer room prior to COVID-19 pandemic, visit: https://www.facebook.com/1590492181/videos/10220139930680422/.
The Results are in! AO's Virtual 5K
AO's first summer Virtual 5K challenge was a huge success. With over 60 participants, we raised $1,140 to help create a computer learning environment in Nepal. This learning environment will provide the local students and educators with the technological tools and opportunities they need to prosper, especially in the age of distance and virtual learning.
We received a lot of positive feedback from this virtual 5K, including stories of triumph. One participate, in particular, mentioned how he treasured this time preparing for this event with his son. It was a welcomed distraction that helped him and his son get outside in a safe and engaging manner.
This fall, we plan on hosting another virtual 5K. Stay tuned for further details.
